Brave New World Lamp

Project Title: Brave New World Lamp
Location: Pembrokeshire
Wood Species: White Oak

Project Description

The Project

The Brave New World Lamp was first designed and built in September 2008 by Marcus Beck and Simon Macro, co-founders of Freshwest Design. The lamp was originally designed and built as a one off piece for an exhibition for London Design Week 2008. During the exhibition the lamp was spotted by Casper Vissers, co-founder of Dutch design brand moooi. Moooi have since licensed the lamp from Freshwest and it is now in production and was launched during Milan Furniture Fair 2009.

The lamp is constructed from 15mm square oak baton and fully extended stands at approximately 180cm high. It can be moved in the same manner as an angle poise lamp but uses cast iron weights instead of springs to counter balance itself.

Starting as a concept piece following the example of old Far Eastern bamboo scaffolding, The Brave New World Lamp was developed without a design or plan in place. However each piece of wood is carefully notched and pegged together to form an integral part of the overall mechanical structure. The limitations of using small pieces of wood to create a large form allowed the design process to be as responsive as possible, much like a sculptor’s relationship to their material.
