Project Title: Console Table
Location: Windsor
Wood Species Used: EUROPEAN WALNUT (JUGLANS REGIA)
Project Description
Made last summer as a speculative piece, this console table was designed as a contemporary, functional piece which expresses, in solid form, the beauty of what many regard as our finest native furniture wood.
The construction of the ends gives strength and rigidity without the need for heavy sections of timber; the vertical extensions are intended to suggest protection for any precius objects displayed on the table top. A longitudinal rail, unseen from normal viewing angles, should prevent sagging over long time.
The drawer carcass is attached to the ends with housed, stopped mortice and tenon joints for maximum strength. The circular apertures act as a visual contrast the the overall angularity of the piece and invite theeye to look at the grain patterns of their circunferences: end grain is a prominent detail of this table.
The drawers are dovetailed by hand back and front in the finest tradition of English cabinetmaking, and have ripple sycamore sides and Lebanon cedar bottoms. The finish is acid catalised lacquer to give excellent surface protection and bring out the full beauty of the richly figured walnut.
The table has recently been bought for a contemporary-styled newly built house.
