Location: Peterchurch, Herefordshire
Wood Species: OAK

Product Description

The Project

Brief:
Re-order a 12th Century Grade 1 listed church to create a sustainable multi-use community building, designed to function as:

Service delivery centre for children’s services (Sure Start programme)

Public lending library

Worship space for Anglican services

Community event space

Strategy:
Due to the sensitive nature of the site in heritage and religious terms, Communion Design endeavoured to change as little as possible about the existing building, and sought to reduce to an absolute minimum the facilities required to deliver the brief. These facilities were prioritised as follows:

Wood pellet boiler

Kitchen

Accessible WC

WC

Cleaners area

Stair and lift access to first floor balcony

To minimise impact, all facilities were designed to be contained within freestanding timber boxes. When use dictates, the boxes are opened allowing the existing spaces to be transformed from 12th century patterns of worship, to more contemporary uses almost instantly. Once the activity is complete, the boxes are closed, and the space returns to sacred silence.

The timber boxes are designed as lightweight, freestanding and reversible insertions within the existing space. Considerable effort was required to make these constructions comply with the fire regulations. Structurally, the boxes are constructed from 125×75mm softwood stud work, braced with 19mm plywood sheathing. Careful detailing of the frame ensures absolute structural stability. The frame bears onto a timber soleplate, which bears directly onto the reinforced slab; this prevented the need for intrusive excavations in an archeologically sensitive site.
The outer cladding of the boxes was specific to each. The largest and most complex was located at the West end of the chancel. This box housed the kitchen, accessible WC, platform lift and plant room. This gave support to the oak staircase and first floor balcony with bridge to the new library. The cladding was formed from 20mm thick, 100mm wide American grown oak boards. Great care was required in its construction, since to achieve an elevation of uninterrupted oak boards, the setting out of the internal spaces and the placement of the opening apertures was subject to the matrix of the oak board cladding. This was particularly taxing for the integration of the platform lift door.

Although the oak cladding fire protects the structure, it did present a risk of surface spread of flame. To overcome this, the oak boards were finished with 2 layers of Envirograph VFR, overcoated with Osmo Polyx Hardwax which gave a pleasing final appearance.

The floors were finished with either 15mm or 22mm thick, 180mm wide engineered board, which act well with the underfloor heating loops installed. A 75kw KWB wood pellet boiler is housed in a cedar clad energy cabin, located on the edge of the churchyard. Bespoke storage furniture was designed by Communion, and constructed in oak or clad in Portuguese cork, which allows for display of the children’s works within the nave of the church.

Last night [14 October] The Wood Awards were presented at The Carpenters’ Hall in London in front of over 200 leading lights in the industry. Britain’s premier architecture and furniture competition recognises innovative design in wood and this year the judges were more impressed than ever with the high standard of entries. The coveted Gold Award went to London’s Kings Place Concert Hall which also picked up the Commercial and Public Access Award.

Holding 420 people, Kings Place Concert Hall possesses state of the art acoustics and boasts an elegant interior. The concert hall amplifies the sense of intimacy, yet it is large enough to accommodate a small orchestra which has seen the Hall regularly being used for live radio broadcasts. The design, a collaboration between architect Dixon Jones Ltd and Arup Acoustics, ticked all the right boxes for the independent judging panel who commented that this is a “truly outstanding project which is a tour de force of precision joinery, balancing acoustic performance with the pure rational geometry sought out by the architect”.

Structural Engineers Price and Myers walked away with the Structural Award for Deal Pier Café and Bar. Commissioned by Dover District Council, the brief was to replace the existing cafe which had suffered substantial corrosion as a result of its seaside location.

Challenged with the task of trying to find a material suited to the harsh conditions, Iroko was selected as the primary material due to its highly durable nature. Apart from the technicalities of the project, the look of the Pier Café also proved a hit with the judges. They commented: “Perched on the end of the pier, the rhythmic, repetitive design of this structure creates in itself a complete stunning building with razor sharp detailing”.

The Private category was won by a refurbished Victorian House in West Dulwich. Having been poorly converted in the 1960s, Carson Road was gutted before construction could commence leaving Knox Bhavan Architects with a blank canvas. This allowed them to create “a beautifully detailed suburban family home using a variety of timbers and contractors”.

The winner of the Conservation/Restoration category this year was The Merchant’s House, described by the judges as “a labour of love undertaken to rescue a house and restore it to its former glory”. Renovated with passion, its owner developed a true architectural relationship with the building and demonstrated both determination and patience. For these reasons The Merchant’s House was widely praised and admired for the “quality and attention to detail achieved throughout”.

The overall winner in the Furniture category was Gloster Furniture Limited’s Elan Outdoor Furniture, which also triumphed in the Exterior Furniture sub category. The beautiful outdoor chairs and tables were especially praised for their “intriguing designs and exceptional quality of construction.”

Other Winners on the night were Oak Bridge by McMorran & Gatehouse Architects for the Best Use of British Timber, Hoddinott Hall by Capita Architecture for Best Use of Panel Products, Falmouth School in Cornwall for Offsite Construction and West Mayfield by Oliver Chapman Architects Ltd for Best Small Project.

The Wood Awards is supported by various generic sponsors, led by the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC), the Carpenters’ Company and the Forestry Commission.

With the introduction of the new furniture sub categories and the already established popularity of the Awards in the architectural world, interest is already gathering for next years Awards with the entry period opening in March 2010.
Last night [14 October] The Wood Awards were presented at The Carpenters’ Hall in London in front of over 200 key figures in the timber industry. This year the UK’s premier furniture and architecture competition which recognises innovation and design in wood, awarded Gloster Furniture Limited’s Elan Outdoor Furniture first prize. Tom Kealy’s Grace-Longcase Clock was Highly Commended by the judges who were impressed by the exceptional craftsmanship and detailing of the bespoke piece.

This year saw the expansion of the Awards’ Furniture category with the introduction of four sub categories allowing greater recognition of craftsmanship and design in wood in a variety of furniture types, from single-piece bespoke furniture, to small batch and mass produced pieces for the commercial market.Elan Outdoor Furniture also triumphed in the new Exterior Furniture sub category fighting off stiff competition from Philip Koomen’s experimental Wave & Splash Bench. The beautiful outdoor chairs and tables, made from plantation grown Indonesian teak, were especially praised for their “intriguing designs and exceptional quality of construction”

The Single Piece Domestic Furniture award was given to the Mirror Frame described by the judges as “an example of the very best in craftsmanship”. The piece was also said to display “an incredibly high level of skill and a passion for woodworking”. Designer and Maker Georgy Mkrtichian said he “chose to create a flowing pattern reminiscent of flames to reflect the warmth of the colour of the wood”.

The prize for a Single Piece for a Public Space was awarded to Seating at Graves Gallery by Christian O’Reilly. Dubbed “a real achievement in furniture design” the three freestanding oak seats were particularly praised by the judges for answering the client’s demanding brief whilst perfectly fitting into their surroundings.

Production furniture, the final sub category award, went to the wonderfully crafted L’Arche Cabinet, part of the Litton Collection. The piece, which used lace-wood veneers and stood out for its memorable vanishing geometric effect, was a very popular choice with the judges for aesthetic reasons alone, but was also said to have “commendable attention to detail, both on the inside and out”.

The Wood Awards judges selected an impressive shortlist from nearly 200 entries on Monday, 1 June at Carpenter’s Hall, London.

For the first time the 34 strong shortlist is being announced immediately after the shortlisting day when the panel of independent expert judges chaired by Giles Downes, of Sidell Gibson Architects reviewed all the entries in the first phase of judging.

Featuring stunning private houses, skilful restorations, superb public buildings and bespoke furniture, the shortlist boasts an impressive array of contenders for The Wood Awards’ main categories: Commercial and Public Access, Private, Structural, Conservation/Restoration and Furniture. The entries going through to the next stage come from a wide range of sources, from leading national architectural and design practices to smaller bespoke joinery and furniture making companies.

Giles Downes, of Sidell Gibson Architects and Chairman of the judges says: “The Wood Awards is a fantastic initiative, with entrants and industry experts coming together to recognise and celebrate the use of wood in architecture and furniture design. Each year, the quality and diversity of the entries is very impressive and I am delighted that we have considerably exceeded the number of entries last year. Amongst 2009’s submissions there has been a very wide range of entries in the Commercial and Public Access category, as well as a fine range of private houses. It is encouraging to see that good design is alive and well, despite the current difficult financial climate. The Wood Awards plays a vital role in the promotion of the world’s most sustainable building material and the event’s ability to highlight the particular advantages of using wood, across a wide range of applications, is increasingly relevant.”

The Wood Awards is sponsored by a number of organisations, led by the American Hardwood Export Council, Forestry Commission and Carpenters’ Company and is now in its seventh year as the UK’s premier award scheme celebrating excellence in wood in buildings and furniture made in Britain.

Winners will be announced at the Carpenter’s Hall on 14 October 2009.

Organisers of The Wood Awards are inviting architects, furniture designers and anyone involved with a building project using wood to enter what has become the premier awards scheme for the use of the world’s only naturally sustainable material. Entries open on Monday 2 March, and at a time when sustainability and a desire to be green are at the top of political and architectural agendas, it is hoped that 2009 will be a record year.Launched in 2003, The Wood Awards have made their mark on the architectural and design world, becoming a ‘mark of excellence’ in wood, with past Gold Winners including leading names such as Simon Conder (for Pinion’s Barn), Glen Howells for the dramatic Savill Gardens Visitor Centre and Feilden Clegg Bradley (for the timber-framed Formby Pool in Lancashire). In 2008 the coveted Gold Award was won by the Building Design Partnership (BDP) for the New Shetland Museum & Archives in Lerwick, described by judges as “an excellent building, which fits in very well with its surroundings and which was a real joy to visit”.

Broad entry categories are designed to attract every type and size of project in construction, joinery and furniture. With permission from the owner, anyone associated with an eligible building or furniture project - from timber supplier to designer - can enter the project before the closing date of 22 May 2009.

The focus for 2009 will be the expansion and development of the Furniture category, which is seen as an important category for the future of The Wood Awards. This year saw some exceptional entries, with The Sleeping Dragon, an outdoor piece designed by Alun Heslop of chaircreative, taking the prize. This category has an impressive past, having launched the careers of furniture designers and makers including Jason Heap, whose Infinity +1 was Highly Commended by the judges in 2007, and Katie Walker whose Ribbon Chair clinched the top prize in 2006.

Chairman of the judges, Giles Downes of Sidell Gibson Architects comments, “The standard of entries we receive for The Wood Awards is always incredibly high, and 2008 was no exception. With projects as far afield as the Shetland Islands and Cornwall, the judging process was lengthy but inspirational. The use of wood in building and furniture design has come on leaps and bounds, and I am delighted to be involved in an awards scheme which celebrates this. I just hope that in 2009 we are able to exceed the quantity and quality of entries we received last year - a difficult challenge, but one I am confident will be met with the support of the industry.”

The list of Wood Awards sponsors includes many of the leading organisations involved in wood marketing and education in the UK, including the Forestry Commission, the Carpenters’ Company and the American Hardwood Export Council(AHEC).

The categories for entry are Commercial & Public Access, Private, Structural, Conservation/Restoration and Furniture. Additional awards may also be made at the discretion of the judges for a Small Project, a project demonstrating Innovation, or the Best Use of British Timber - all of which are irrespective of category - as well as an Offsite Construction award and a new award introduced in 2008 for the Best Use of Wood Panel Products. The coveted Gold Award goes to the winner of winners from all the building categories.

The Call for Entries period opens on 2 March 2009, closing on 22 May. Entry forms and full Terms and Conditions for entry can be found at http://www.woodawards.com/.

The New Shetland Museum and Archives was labelled “an excellent building that fits in very well with its surroundings” by the independent judging panel. The building, with sloped walls conceived as abstract sails, echoes the sails of traditional Shetland herring boats in colour and form while taking inspiration from the Shetland’s Nordic neighbours. The Museum juxtaposes local heritage with the needs of a modern community in a clean space comprising of a cinema/lecture theatre, display galleries and public search rooms. Architect Angus Kerr of BDP has achieved an “excellent building that fits in beautifully with its wind lashed surroundings” where trees are strikingly absent and visitors are brought face to face with Shetland’s maritime history.

The Stadthaus, the world’s tallest timber residential building and winner of the Structural and Offsite Construction category, challenges the “fears and prejudices of established practitioners”, according to the judging panel. This nine storey building, where even the lift cores are made from wood, went up in just nine weeks thanks to Waugh Thistleton’s prefabricated panel design manufactured from 70% waste timber.

The Private category was won this year by Halligan House, a project which presented architects Simon Condor and Associates with a tight budget and the unusual restraints of a flat roof and a single storey. Set in a traditional suburban road this home combines a simple palette of materials with a basic courtyard layout providing light and ventilation as well as external spaces to rooms.

The winner of the Conservation/Restoration category matched the skills of modern craftsmen to those of their medieval ancestors. With bespoke tools required to uncover the timber panelling in the dining room, the restoration of Whitestaunton Manor by Jonathan Rhind Architects shows “a passion and eye for detail that must be admired and applauded” as well as the workmanship and dedication needed for this skilful craft.

The 2008 winner of the Furniture category brings fluid movement in a static sculpture to a Bedfordshire Garden. Commissioned to celebrate a 30th Wedding Anniversary, The Sleeping Dragon is a “superbly executed and imaginative piece” in which designer/maker Alun Heslop captures the outstanding design and craftsmanship of furniture made in Britain.

The Awards, hosted by Craig White of White Design and Chairman of ‘Wood for Gold’, an initiative set up to encourage the use of wood in the build up to 2012, and supported by the North East Timber Trade Association (NETTA), were presented in front of an invited audience of around 200 architectural, design, and wood professionals. Now in its sixth year, The Wood Awards aim to recognise, encourage and promote outstanding design and craftsmanship in wood, the only sustainable building material.

The Wood Awards is supported by twenty generic sponsors, led by the American Hardwood Export Council, the Carpenters’ Company, the Forestry Commission and wood for good.

Interest in the Wood Awards 2009 is already gathering momentum with the entry period opening in March 2009. For further information visit www.woodawards.com.

Leading architects, specifiers and journalists will be present for the official launch of this year’s Wood Awards shortlist on the opening day of architectural and design show, 100% Detail at London’s Earl Court.

The 29 strong shortlist is to be unveiled by last year’s Gold Award winner, Andy Couling from Feilden Clegg Bradley Architects, whose Formby Pool swept the board at last years’ awards.

Featuring stunning private houses, skilful restorations, superb public buildings and bespoke furniture, this year’s shortlist boasts an impressive array of contenders for the Award’s main categories: Commercial and Public Access, Private, Structural, Conservation / Restoration and Furniture.

From around 200 entries, 29 have been selected by a panel of independent architectural, design and wood specialist judges across 5 main award categories [See Notes to Editors below]. Entries range from leading national architectural and design practices to smaller bespoke joiners.

Giles Downes, of Sidell Gibson Architects and chairman of the judges says: “The Wood Awards is a fantastic initiative, with entrants and industry experts coming together to recognise and celebrate the use of wood in architecture and furniture design. Each year, the quality of the entries is extremely impressive and this year is no exception with a very wide range of entries in the commercial and public access category, as well as a fine range of private houses. From the Shetland Isles to Cornwall, every part of the country is represented. It is encouraging to see that good design is alive and well, even in the most remote locations!”

Wood is the only naturally sustainable building material available and the Wood Awards, led by the American Hardwood Export Council, Forestry Commission, Carpenters’ Company and wood for good and now in its sixth year is the UK’s premier award scheme celebrating excellence in wood in buildings and furniture made in Britain.

Winners will be announced at the Carpenter’s Hall on 15th October 2008.

Organisers of this year’s Wood Awards are delighted by the standard of this year’s entries. Entries closed at the end of May for this highly celebrated award scheme which recognises excellence in architecture and design in wood. Amongst the 200 or so entries across the entry categories were some respected names in the architectural world including Foster and Partners and Alison Brooks Architects.

Commenting at the judging day at Carpenters’ Hall, Giles Downes, Chairman of the Judges, spoke about the fact that the entries continue to be of a very high standard. He said: “Each year the quality of the entries is extremely impressive, and this year is no exception with a very wide range in the commercial and public access category, as well as a fine range of private houses, revealing the continuing design trend for timber cladding and interiors for the home”.

The Commercial & Public Access category formed the largest of the five building categories and attracted projects from swimming pools to grand castles. Interestingly, supermarkets were a recurring theme with ASDA, Tesco and Sainsbury’s stores all featured amongst this year’s line up. Giles says that this reflects the growing appeal of timber in an increasingly environmentally conscious world. “It was particularly interesting to see three supermarkets with structural timber frames entered this year. With the wide spans required for supermarkets, the use of timber structures is new to this type of building, reflecting the growing requirement and willingness of supermarkets to use sustainable materials in their construction.”

The quality of the furniture submissions was also high. Semi bespoke furniture designer/maker Philip Koomen and Lowther Fine Furniture’s offerings featured amongst a whole host of submissions from emerging and established furniture talent.

Furniture judge Luke Hughes commented on the outstanding range of innovative ideas from some new names in the industry. He said: “There are some really exciting entries this year; gratifyingly original pieces, some intriguing and well-executed ideas and, best of all, some promising new names”.

The judging panel, including RIBA Journal’s Hugh Pearman, Hopkins’ Jim Greaves and Alan Johnson of English Heritage, is gearing up for a busy summer of judging trips across the length and breadth of Britain.

The official shortlist will be unveiled at 100% Detail on 18th September in London. For further updates and more information please visit www.woodawards.com.

The 21st May is the fast approaching deadline for entries for this year’s Wood Awards.

Organisers of The Wood Awards are urging architects and designers to get their entries in before the May 21st Deadline. This is the UK’s premier architecture and furniture competition celebrating excellence in design in the world’s most sustainable building material.

Michael Buckley, organiser of the Awards says “We know architects and designers are used to working to tight deadlines and every year we get phone calls to check there is still time. I would urge all potential entrants to go to the website and enter their project as soon as possible”.

The Awards’ website has also been re-launched with a complete makeover and a range of improvements all focusing on streamlining the entry and payment system - meaning it is now possible to enter the Awards online. The site also shows off the raft of stunning images the Wood Awards receives over the years.

Broad entry categories are designed to attract every type and size of project in construction, joinery and furniture. With permission from the owner, anyone associated with a qualifying building or furniture project - from timber supplier to designer - can enter the project before the closing date of 21 May 2008. It must have been completed between May 2007 and May 2008 or May 2006 and May 2008 if the project is furniture.
The list of Wood Awards sponsors includes most of the leading organisations involved in wood marketing and education in the UK including wood. for good, the Forestry Commission, the Carpenters’ Company and the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC)

David Venables, European Director of AHEC, highlighted the key role The Wood Awards plays in showcasing the adaptability, aesthetics and sustainability of wood. “The re-launch of the Wood Awards six years ago marked the start of a renaissance for wood. In a world in which designers and architects are increasingly scrutinising the materials they specify and use, wood is coming into its own as the ultimate in beautiful and sustainable materials. We are hoping for some exciting entries and the emergence of some new fresh talent to champion the cause for wood.”

The categories for entry are Commercial & Public Access, Private, Structural, Conservation/Restoration and Furniture. Additional awards may also be made at the discretion of the judges for a Small Project, any Innovation, or the Best Use of British Timber - all of which are irrespective of category - as well as an Offsite Manufactured Project and a new award for the Best Use of Wood Panel Products. The coveted Gold Award goes to the winner of winners from all the building categories. Entry forms and full Terms and Conditions for entry can be found at www.woodawards.com.

The full shortlist will be announced and exhibited for the fifth year running at 100% Detail at Earls Court in September and the award winners will be announced at The Wood Awards Party at Carpenters’ Hall in London in October. Winners will be announced at Carpenters’ Hall in October.
