Georgian Panelled Library

Project Title: Kings Place Concert Hall
Location: Northumberland
Wood Species: ENGLISH OAK

Product Description

The Project

The requirement was for a Panelled Library to a ground floor room of a Georgian Hall. The specification was that all mouldings, features and styles were to match the existing elsewhere in the Hall. For the project, solid English Oak was used throughout with no compromise on any other materials, quality was upmost.

The construction of the room was accomplished with a combination of wedged mortise and tenon joinery, pocket hole systems and biscuit joinery, as well as many other woodworking methods. All timber was selected plank by plank for its character for its position in the room. Following this it was straightened, sized machined, fitted, sanded and finished. The mouldings, door headers, crown mouldings, base board and chair rail are a match to the original. The floor is solid 1″ EO and the boards are 9″ wide. The three doors are 2″ thick six panel Georgian doors, constructed traditionally with fielded raised panels. The window shutters are of the same construction. The bookcases are entirely 1″ thick EO, even the backs. The panels that form the room within the styles and rails are also fielded raised to suit. The fire surround is an exact copy of an original stone surround that was damaged and of no use. All the brassware was sourced nationally and of the highest quality.

I am a self taught woodworker and am passionate about wood. This project was all made on site in another room in the hall with portable machinery and hand tools. I cannot supply drawings as there were none, the plans were in my head. I worked alone on this project from start to finish. Few people have seen it but from two in particular I was given the following comments; “Highly commended and outstanding craftsmanship” by a senior conservation structural engineer, and “One of the best examples of its kind” by a Local Rare property consultant.
