Mirror Frame

Project Title: Mirror Frame
Location: London
Wood Species: ENGLISH WALNUT

Project Description

The Project

I always try to work with nature, not against it. Hence, the design of my mirror frame was inspired by the exceptional quality and beauty of the English walnut, especially the lighter coloured sapwood. This allowed me to showcase these colours and tones symmetrically by book-matching the four sides of the frame.

I chose to create a flowing pattern reminiscent of flames to reflect the warmth of the colour of the wood. This sensuous pattern also emphasised the flow and movement of my carving especially at the four corners of the frame.

I built upon the tradition and strength of my wood-carving skills and created a frame with a modern interpretation to give a contemporary twist. In this piece I wanted to demonstrate that fine traditional carving can be interpreted in a modern way to create a mirror frame of great beauty and character.
