Project Title: The Border Seat
Location: Hampshire
Wood Species: EUROPEAN OAK
Product Description
The Project
A Gaze Burvill Oak Seat was a commission from the Royal Horticultural Society for their garden in Wisley, Surrey. Wisley curator Jim Gardiner was looking for original designs which would provide a comfortable, supportive rest point for visitors, many of whom are elderly or infirm, to the Show Garden, along one of its most popular pathways.
Like all Gaze Burvill oak pieces, the Border Seat is made at the Hampshire workshop by the team of highly skilled craftsmen, who use traditional skills, like steam-bending the one inch timber to create strong, graceful curves. Gaze Burvill only uses prime grade oak from strictly and sustainably managed certified woodlands in Europe, mainly France.
A re-invention of a traditional garden bench, and inspired by the Court Seat and May Throne designs by Christian Gaze, the Border Seat is an elegant addition to any garden, and perfectly suits both traditional and contemporary spaces. Careful design ensures that the seats are unbeaten on comfort and conviviality: the steam-bent ends, shaped in a flared curve, support the back beautifully, and the curved ends mean that sitters naturally turn towards each other, making conversation easier.
Broad seat arms provide generous support for human arms, and, for those who have difficulty getting up from a seat (or down onto it), these are a good ‘push-up’ boost! They will also support a cup of tea…. The elderly and young alike appreciate that any wooden seat is relatively warm to sit on in the winter, and cooler to the touch in summer.
