Unstable Stool

Project Title: Unstable Stool  Location: London
Wood Species: NATIVE ASH

Project Description

The Project

The project aim was to create a simple stool that would allow the user to “rock” whilst sitting at a table or desk – a movement that keeps the back lumbar moving, helps prevent slouching and improves posture.

Working through various prototypes, an optimum asymmetrical rocker was developed, which allows easy forward movement but restricts the amount of backward tilt, to give a stable feeling in use.

Essentially a rocking stool, the “unstable stool” is manufactured in small batches out of native Scottish ash sourced locally.

The asymmetric rocker is steam bent out of air dried ash, and taking inspiration from traditional stools, the ends are round tenoned through the seat, where they are wedged for both strength and beauty.

The seat itself is stack laminated out of ash before being sculpted for comfort and to provide an easily recognisable front and back.

Keeping the structure simple, the asymmetrical hoops are linked with turned ash stretchers, again through tenoned and wedged.

….. a unique, simple, elegant product …….
