Leading architects, specifiers and journalists will be present for the official launch of this year’s Wood Awards shortlist on the opening day of architectural and design show, 100% Detail at London’s Earl Court.

The 29 strong shortlist is to be unveiled by last year’s Gold Award winner, Andy Couling from Feilden Clegg Bradley Architects, whose Formby Pool swept the board at last years’ awards.

Featuring stunning private houses, skilful restorations, superb public buildings and bespoke furniture, this year’s shortlist boasts an impressive array of contenders for the Award’s main categories: Commercial and Public Access, Private, Structural, Conservation / Restoration and Furniture.

From around 200 entries, 29 have been selected by a panel of independent architectural, design and wood specialist judges across 5 main award categories [See Notes to Editors below]. Entries range from leading national architectural and design practices to smaller bespoke joiners.

Giles Downes, of Sidell Gibson Architects and chairman of the judges says: “The Wood Awards is a fantastic initiative, with entrants and industry experts coming together to recognise and celebrate the use of wood in architecture and furniture design. Each year, the quality of the entries is extremely impressive and this year is no exception with a very wide range of entries in the commercial and public access category, as well as a fine range of private houses. From the Shetland Isles to Cornwall, every part of the country is represented. It is encouraging to see that good design is alive and well, even in the most remote locations!”

Wood is the only naturally sustainable building material available and the Wood Awards, led by the American Hardwood Export Council, Forestry Commission, Carpenters’ Company and wood for good and now in its sixth year is the UK’s premier award scheme celebrating excellence in wood in buildings and furniture made in Britain.

Winners will be announced at the Carpenter’s Hall on 15th October 2008.
