Alder Hey Foraging Collection

Project Info

Children are central to the design ethos of this set of foraging tools and mobile foraging larder, as they are for the Alder Hey Children’s Hospital where they now reside to playfully inspire.

At Alder Hey Children’s Hospital they put ‘the child at the centre’; whether that be over clinical decisions, the sizing of furniture and fittings in the hospital campus buildings, or what the ward-chefs make each day. This collection reflects this practice, as it helps children to explore the foraging landscape of wild edible plants built at the entrance of Sunflower House.

Foraging is a light touch and engaging way of addressing the five steps of mental well-being, which are; being physically active, connecting with people, learning something new, giving to others, and paying attention to the present. Crafted from sweet chestnut, the collection includes a mobile forging kitchen, mobile larder, ‘smile trug’, apple basket, apple picker, branch puller-downer, three-legged stool with chord handle and a foraging satchel.
