Aran
Project Info
Marrying sustainable, low waste technologies with time-honoured craftmanship, the Aran loungechair is an impressive example of cross-industry collaboration.
Finetuned to eliminate waste, the design comprises a technical knitted sleeve stretched over a structurally efficient timber frame. Varying densities and structures of knit, inspired by rich knitting traditions are used to create a sculptural appearance with minimal mass.
Precise modern CNC techniques are combined with traditional woodworking to create an optimised timber frame that works in perfect harmony with the knitted sleeve, holding it in tension and creating an ergonomic surface that cradles the sitter.
Developed by Morgan in collaboration with Camira Fabrics, the chair is entirely made from recycled and renewable materials. The technical knitted surface is 100% recycled polyester, woven from a blend of 90% post-consumer plastic bottles diverted from landfill and 10% plastic from marine litter. Sustainably sourced beech, oak, ash, or walnut is used for the frame.
Sustainability is at the forefront of Aran’s design process. Each chair is designed for easy disassembly forrepair or recycling and the timber frame is manufactured in-house at Morgan’s Hampshire factory.
