Bempton Barrels

Project Info

Seeking to sensually connect users with natural processes of weathering, this collection of side tables features progressively corroded stages of finish.

With simple sculptural forms and highly tactile surfaces, the BemptonBarrels expose the inner characteristics of their natural material. Made from Douglas fir timber, the collection consists of three tables: one naturally finished, one ebonised and the third ebonised and sandblasted.

The construction of each barrel involves domino joining eight precisely angled pieces of wood together to form an octagon. Using a jig, these are then hand turned on a lathe to create the smooth cylindrical form of the tables. The beautiful detailing to the end-grain is revealed through the use of transparent cut-glass tops.
