Prioritising flexibility, efficiency and resource conservation, this multipurpose village hall has been carefully tailored to meet the local community’s needs.

Developed in close consultation with social, civic and public groups, this project uses regenerative design principles to create a valuable and sustainable asset that will benefit the Framlingham community for years to come.

Referencing the vernacular of Suffolk’s black barns, the familiar form of a village hall is presented with an exposed, lightweight timber frame and a dark zinc façade. Grouped around a double-height timber-lined hall is a meeting room, office, tea point and toilets, together accommodating a full and varied programme of events and activities.

High levels of insulation, a low-carbon glulam structure and robust natural materials are combined with efficient lighting, natural ventilation and solar panels to minimise embodied and operational energy. All building details, services and fittings have been designed for low-skill operation, repair and maintenance.
