Dulwich Pavilion 2019

Project Info

The 10m high cubic pavilion acted as a welcome and event space for Dulwich Picture Gallery. Visitors were able to climb to a perimeter gantry held within the depth of the pavilion’s slender timber structure and enjoy views of the event space below.

The structural frame was constructed from painted Douglas fir sections. European redwood patterned louvres clad the pavilion. A simple geometric pattern was applied to the outer face of each louvre. Another pattern of horizontal stripes was applied to the sides. The colours and patterns seemed to constantly change as you moved around the building.

A single colour was applied to the inner face to create a calm interior. Wood was chosen for its haptic and acoustic qualities. The timber’s slight imperfections contributed to the sense that the cladding was an overlapping, colourful fabric. The wood has since been repurposed to create a range of garden and playground furniture constructed by local school children.
