This timber-framed and clad home in County Antrim has been thoughtfully designed to create a tranquil environment in which a couple can grow old with independence and dignity, immersed in nature.

Surrounded by native Irish woodland planted by the clients four decades ago, two vernacular, timber-clad forms sit at an angle to one another. The two wings–one for living and the other for sleeping–are connected by a glazed entrance link that opens out toward scenic landscape views.

With natural materials, neutral tones and non-rectilinear edges, the house takes on an inherent softness. The timber-frame structure has been fully clad in western red cedar shingles, giving a uniform appearance to the building. As they gracefully weather to grey, the shingles blend in with their woodland surroundings. Polished concrete used for garden pathways and floors connects indoor and outdoor spaces, while carefully crafted oak stairs and bespoke joinery bring warmth to the interior.
