Inspired by the twisting forms of roots and branches, the Kontur Series reveals the rich colour and grain of yellow birch through sculptural carving and thoughtful craftsmanship.

The collection, comprising a cabinet and wall mirror, results from material experimentation using characterful No. 1 grade yellow birch. No. 1 is a timber grade often overlooked in favour of cleaner, straighter wood, leading to the underuse of a beautiful and versatile resource.

The design celebrates the rich spectrum of colour variation found naturally in yellow birch. To amplify these characteristics, boards were laminated into three-layer sections before being carefully carved to expose striking patterns running through the timber. The sculpted framework wraps around each piece, with the carving precisely aligned across the doors and carcasses so they open and close seamlessly. Clean, understated surfaces to the cabinet fronts and top provide a calm contrast, allowing the carved framework to take centre stage.

By combining innovative making techniques with an appreciation of the timber’s natural character, the Kontur Series shows how considered design can unlock new aesthetic possibilities for an underused material.
