Pembroke Mill Lane (Phase 1)

This significant expansion of Pembroke College provides a range of public and collegiate spaces within thoughtfully integrated new and existing buildings.

The first phase of the development has transformed a number of under-used and poorly connected historical buildings into a cohesive college environment, providing teaching, social and administrative spaces.

Knitting these historic buildings together is a series of new timber interventions which include a gatehouse, a foyer and the reconstructed schoolhouse of the former church. These carefully crafted spaces share a common language of expressed oak glulam framing and CLT decks, complemented by extensive solid oak linings and joinery.

Spanning between the existing masonry buildings, the single-storey linear foyer has been proportioned to open up views from the garden to the side elevation of the auditorium. The schoolhouse has been artfully reconstructed using new timber frame and bricks reclaimed from the original building to create a two-storey social space.
