A modernist terraced house has been revived and reconfigured to provide a beautiful, high-performance home for a growing family.

This bespoke restoration and retrofit encompasses the whole house, upgrading its overall energy efficiency and introducing a more sophisticated and pragmatic layout to support the family’s evolving needs.

The internal arrangement has been cleverly adapted to create a defined relationship between indoor and outdoor zones and logical connections between the entrance, kitchen and living areas. The addition of multifunctional spaces with movable partitions, including a bedroom/gym in the basement and an eaves-level office/bedroom, allows for future reconfiguration and adaptability with minimal waste.

The original Paraná pine ceilings and stair cladding were carefully retained and inspired a reinstatement of modernist characteristics and material palettes throughout. New bespoke joinery has been expertly crafted in complementary cherry veneer, while soft textures and colours elevate the atmosphere. Natural, durable and recyclable materials – timber, ceramic, wool, linen, and glass – were chosen to minimise embodied carbon.

With dramatically improved thermal performance and a 93% reduction in annual CO₂ emissions, Pine Heath exemplifies how sensitive retrofit and thoughtful design can deliver lasting sustainability and beauty. Prioritising reuse and restoration over replacement, the project has retained over 90% of the original structure, drastically reducing embodied carbon while preserving the architectural legacy of post-war London design.
