Exploring concepts of repair and care in design practice, this series of works is inspired by techniques used in Japanese restoration of historical wooden architecture.

The ‘Tsugiki’ furniture pieces are crafted from reclaimed pine beams sourced from old farm barns, which are processed by hand and joined with new sections of wood, giving a second life to agriculture construction material.

Nails are painstakingly removed from the beams, leaving unique irregular notches which are filled with carefully shaped pieces of timber offcuts. Once repaired, the beams are then joined with sections of ash, sourced from fallen UK trees, to form patched items of furniture.

The final touch involves hand-carving each piece to create a seamless transition between the aged and new wood. The process celebrates handcrafting and honours the past and future lives of the timber. By juxtaposing the old and new, these works bring together different stories of wood into a harmonious narrative.
