Walworth Town Hall – one of London’s iconic civic buildings – has been restored and extended, following a devastating fire that left the building derelict for almost a decade.

Carefully reimagined with structural timber, the Grade II-listed Victorian landmark is now a vibrant workspace and community hub. The meticulous redevelopment has breathed new life into 50,000sqft of previously unusable space, which is now fit for modern use, while paying homage to the building’s rich heritage.

Combining elements of old and new, the design makes sympathetic references to the town hall’s 19th-century architecture, while introducing modern CLT features to replace fire-damaged sections of the building.

Timber has been instrumental to the building’s transformation; from its vertical extensions to its new vaulted ceilings, sculptural roof turrets, open-plan lobbies and a bespoke soffit with integrated lighting and arched columns.

By integrating sustainable materials into the redevelopment of a historic building without compromising its architectural integrity, this project demonstrates a successful blend of heritage preservation and environmental consciousness.
