Harnessing the warmth of natural materials and light to create a space of empathy, serenity and dignity, this CLT extension forms part of a wider expansion and renovation of Westminster Coroner’s Court.

 The extension adjoins the existing Grade II-listed Victorian Courthouse via a glazed link and features a barrel-vaulted roof that echoes the architectural character of the top-lit volume of the original courtroom. 

 The new building accommodates a family room, an office and a large flexible space which can be used as either a second courtroom or a jurors’ room. Flexibility is provided to the space by a set of oversized folding oak doors that can be opened or shut as required. The use of Ligno panelling helps achieve the high acoustic standard required by the court and conceals a new MVHR system.

 Complementing the newly restored fine hardwood joinery of the original building, the carefully detailed CLT structure of the extension has been left exposed in key areas along with two large glulam beams, which span the length of the barrel-vaulted roof.

 In addition to investigating unexplained deaths and conducting inquests, Westminster Coroner’s Court forms part of a Designated Disaster Mortuary which can be called to action at short notice. The sensitive nature of the project, therefore, meant that speed, ease of construction and minimal disruption were all key factors which led to the specification of CLT to form the extension’s superstructure.
