Exploring the unique beauty and irregular growth patterns of organic material, this collection of intricately crafted vessels honours the maker’s mother, who passed away from fibroids.

Fibroids are non-cancerous growths that develop in the walls of the womb. Responding to the irregular formations and clusters of its growth, this project seeks to raise awareness of this illness through the creation of ten evocative vessels that combine personal memorial with rich artistic expression.  

Each vessel is handcrafted with the use of a lathe, Dremel and pyrography machine to manipulate forms, textures and tones, capturing a state of material transition. Using a wide variety of hardwoods, including sweet chestnut, oak burr, sycamore, ash and beech, the vessels emerge slowly, sensitively responding to the particular characteristics and imperfections of the timbers. Using mostly naturally fallen trees, each piece of wood has been sourced within five miles of the maker’s workshop, in the London Borough of Greenwich.
